Forest of Friendship

Long-time Alabama 99s member, Harriett Monroe Hall will be inducted into the International Forest of Friendship in Atchison, Kansas. Harriett will be honored at the ceremony on Saturday, September 18, 2021, and an engraved stone with her name will be added to the walkways that wind through the Forest. Harriett Monroe Hall was born in Bessemer, Alabama, with aviation in her blood. At a young age, she was given an opportunity to fly in a plane and fell in love with flying.  As a teenager, she joined the Wing Scouts, a Girl Scout program for girls interested in learning about aviation. Harriett’s other passions were horses, the outdoors, and working with children. 

After graduation from high school, Harriett left Birmingham to pursue a Health and Physical Education degree from Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas. While in college, Harriett was a member of the synchronized swim team, and during her summers, she worked as a camp counselor for numerous horse ranches. Harriett married and had two sons Joe and Michael. The family eventually returned to Alabama, where Harriett earned her master’s degree in Education from Livingston University. Harriett taught high school physical education and worked for a local Parks and Recreation Board. 

In 1974, Harriett finally fulfilled her dream of earning her private pilot’s license. Harriett joined The Ninety-Nines, becoming a Life member. She was actively involved in the 99s attending many International Conferences making memories and lasting friendships. Harriett held various officer positions at the Chapter and Section level. Harriett joined the Civil Air Patrol and rose to the rank of captain. With Harriett’s educational background, she led aerospace education workshops in local schools and colleges.    

Harriett shared her passion for flying with everyone she met. Her brothers both obtained their pilot’s license as well as her son Joe. Harriett attended all types of airshows from local to Oshkosh and had the opportunity to fly the Goodyear Blimp and log the time. Harriett introduced her four granddaughters to aviation. Her oldest granddaughter shares her passion for flying and is currently pursuing her pilot’s license.
